Ward 3 PVD News: March 17th

Hello Friends & Neighbors,

I hope you’ve been enjoying the spring weather that finally melted our historic snow!

Thank you for all of your advocacy and outreach during and after the storm. With such a historic snowfall (most recorded in RI history!), it’s good to take the opportunity to learn where we can do better going forward. We know that this has also led to some pretty historic potholes (I think I left my stomach in an especially deep one on Frost St). If a pothole has damaged your car, you might be eligible for reimbursement up to $300 from the City.

You can call the Clerk’s office (401-680-5248) or see this website for details: https://council.providenceri.gov/clerk-claims/

As we move into spring (I hope ), I want to share some updates from City Council. Take a look and pass on the information below to folks who need to know…

Big News: Ordinance Passed!

With big thanks to all of our neighbors who advocated for this, I unanimously passed my ordinance on March 5th that reins in the process for when utilities tear up our roads and sidewalks for routine utility system maintenance. I heard from so many neighbors about roads left in disrepair, tools left on sidewalks and lawns, and no notice before construction began, leaving you trapped in your driveways. The ordinance holds the utilities accountable and makes them implement some common-sense practices. When applying for a permit, the utilities need to provide information such as how they will notify residents within 48 hours ahead of tearing up a roadway, their plans for clean up at the end of the day, how they plan to coordinate with other utilities, etc. Failure to comply with their plan can result in a fine of $500/day per project.

I know this was a busy week, so I wanted to make sure folks had access to the recording of the meeting!

Topics Being Discussed in City Council

Rent Stabilization:

Thank you to the hundreds of people who have testified on our proposed rent stabilization ordinance. We held an East Side listening session with over 3 hours of testimony. I also serve on the HOPE committee, where we heard another 6 hours of testimony and received nearly 1,000 letters. Also wanted to show gratitude for the folks who have reached out individually to share their stories, data, experiences, and studies with me directly over coffee or conversation. I am listening, and many of us are committed to addressing the costs of rent for our residents in a way that will provide stability and predictability while also not impeding our focus on building new housing — both goals are possible together. An amended version will be released in the coming days. Please continue to send your feedback to the Council through the City Clerk at CityClerk@providenceri.gov

It continues to be an honor to serve you on the Providence City Council. Please reach out any time by replying to this email if there are issues of importance to you or ways I can be of service to you.

With Gratitude,

Sue
